This week we lost another popular person to what appears to be either a drug over-dose or suicide. R.I.P. DJ AM.

This latest death exemplifies a tragic pattern of behavior in our society. Whereas most people have to deal with the ups and downs of life with a sober mind, more and more people are retreating to stimulants in order to forget or ignore the valleys. R.I.P. Reality.

Sadly, this is not a new trend. Alcoholism was very prevalent in the 50's and 60's though it was diagnosed less often. While alcoholism had a proverbial effect on the families of it's addicts, the new trend of pill-popping appears to primarily affect only the participants. The result of this trend is that while Alcoholism created dysfunctional families, conventional drug abuse has completely ended family structures. Obviously the death of a patriarch or matriarch leaves a family dis-jointed in a much more drastic way than the drunk behavior of a parent or sibling (all this assuming the absence of death by DWI, or alcohol poisoning). While these are all bad things, the distinction is that as long as you are alive you will have to eventually deal with the valleys of life...which is the point in this blog entry.

Life's extreme highs cannot be adequately enjoyed unless they are accompanied by lows. This is the precise reason why addicts never really enjoy anything like their first high. The more time you spend high, the less high you get and the more mundane all of your experiences become. But what is a good time without a bad time. The reality is that bad things have to happen. The beauty of humanity is that our response to bad things and how we process bad information will determine how much of an effect bad things have on us. Our sober response to bad things will have a greater affect on how we feel than any drug or narcotic. There's no greater feeling than turning a negative situation into a positive opportunity. Imagine if Jesus' disciples had chosen to drown away His memory in the narcotic choice of the day instead of processing their feelings and relaying His message. The result would've been the mundane remembrance of an eternity changing event as opposed to the birth of the most popular Faith on this planet. If Civil Rights Activists had seen the death of Martin Luther King Jr. as defeat instead of using it as a catalyst for further change, the result would've been the mundane remembrance of a man who tried to change things instead of greatest social change in American History.

I'm not really trying to preach, but I do think that there is a disturbing trend in society to run away from our problems instead of processing and responding to life's harsh realities. I'm sure that Michael Jackson often missed how amazingly blessed he was because he had drowned away some negative memory with a pain-killer. The sad truth about narcotics is that they don't just wash-over bad feelings, they also wash over good feelings. The plain truth about reality is that human beings enjoy good times much more when we are sober than when we are "high."

So Health Care Reform is essential to the revitalization of our economy as well as the development of the disadvantaged. Many (either wealthy or ignorant...or both) right-wingers would have you believe that Obama's Plan for efficiency involves killing off the elderly. Many ignorant people in middle America are screaming about this issue right now at Town Hall Meetings across the country. The concept of Death Panels is insane and another ploy to steer the country away from progress using fear.

Truth is, as developed as America is, we have an extremely primitive Health Care System that leaves far too many people sick, dying, and uncared for. We are the disconnect causing the Global Health Care Initiative's gap.

So Microsoft thought that it was a bad idea to have a black man featured in their Polish ads so they photo-shopped him out. Very bad idea.

See what Microsoft failed to realize is that Black is cool...all over the planet. This is just a testament to the archaic, unintelligent, and idiotic mentality that fuels their primitive technology. People all over the planet worship the sun in efforts to look ethnic. But Microsoft wouldn't understand this concept, which explains why they're ten years behind Apple in the technology gap.

Advertising Indexes across the planet support the fact that "Black" sells. Black people may be the most dense consumer base, but we also produce the biggest Endorsement Returns. For example, Tiger Woods sells more product than Jack Nicklaus, Jay-Z sells more product than Garth Brooks and Bruce Springsteen combined. Michael Jordan sells more product than Dale Earnhardt Jr and Tom Brady combined...and he's retired. So what does all of this mean? It means that removing a black man from an ad was bad for business, even in Poland. It also means that removing a black man from an ad in Poland wasn't a business decision. It wasn't even a socio-economic decision; it was a socio-racial decision.

It tells a bigger story of the deep-rooted hatred and racism that exists as part of a corporate culture, even when the leader of the free world is a black man. To this I say...hey, I use a Mac anyway. Screw you Microsoft; you're not cool enough to identify with a black man.

Ted Kennedy may be one of the most important factors in the election of President Barack Obama (along with him being the best man for the job). When faced with mounting pressure from his friends, the Clintons, Ted Kennedy stood by his convictions and did the right thing. In response to what he felt were racially-tinged remarks by Bill Clinton and the growing negative tone of Hillary Clinton's campaign, he endorsed the black guy that no one thought could win. While he is not without flaw (The car crash in Martha's Vineyard that he didn't report although his female passenger died, sex on a motorboat caught by paparazzi, etc) he has been a consistent champion of civil liberties and the model representative for his state of Massachusetts.

Let's take a moment of silence for a man who lived by conviction and compassion that yielded consistent results.

Disconnected Life Lessons

The below video clip is an exampled of "disconnected life lessons."

Stephon Marbury has learned alot in his life as an athlete and businessman, but he learned many of these lessons as a boy. Boys don't process information the same way that men do. The result is the incoherent ramblings of a boy/man having very public nervous breakdowns because he has had a sudden revelation of how real life is when you become a man.

I pray for Stephon Marbury because he is a good guy. He's also a smart guy. But his response to the current pressures on his life and his thought process (smoking weed on camera during a contract year?) are severely flawed.

I call it a "disconnected life lesson" because his business acumen and skill as a player were developed while he was still a very young guy. There was no gradual growth for this guy. His talent thrust him in a place where he had to make grown man decisions. That's the place of the disconnect: when you don't know how to process thoughts and decisions appropriately, but you have no choice but to do so.

So I saw the Notorious film during it's opening weekend and I thought it was good. Not because it broke any cinematic ground or even told me something that I didn't know about B.I.G. I was just happy that they didn't mess it up. The director told B.I.G.'s story well and did it in a way that did not commend his actions or demonize his enemies.

In many of today's biopics, we often experience a disconnect between the cause and effect of a Protagonist's actions because showing motive is often harder than telling motive. However, in Notorious, the audience knows exactly what drives Christopher Wallace to make the good decisions in his life as well as the bad. For example, when a teenage Christopher Wallace sells crack to a pregnant woman, you know that he does so out of the frustration of his impending fatherhood. Jamal "Gravy" Woolard does a wonderful job of showing the inner conflict created by the irony of an expectant father selling crack to an expectant mother. These conflicts are further explored in the paradox of emotions Christopher experienced and expressed via his relationships with his mother (Voletta), his wife (Faith), his mistress (Lil Kim), and his daughter.

While I was impressed with most of the acting in this film, there were some standout performances besides Jamal Woolard's. Antonique Smith did a great job as B.I.G.'s loving but independent and resilient wife, Faith. Dennis L.A. White was very good as D-Rock, the best friend in the world and the real reason why B.I.G. became a famous rapper. While Angela Bassett is generally a great actress, she did not maintain a consistent accent and I felt that there were moments of over-acting. And while the film had a good cast, the role of Lil Cease was absolutely mis-casted. Marc Jon Jeffries is a good actor but he looked like a monkey in the movie and I don't remember Lil Cease looking that young. Naturi Naughton did a great job as Lil Kim but her performance will always be overshadowed by her unnecessary nudity.

But then the character of Puff helped me understand what made the film good. I never believed that Derek Luke could play a character like Puff because you can't act like you have swagg; you either have it or you don't. However, as Luke played the ever-dancing and motivating Puff, I realized that I wasn't looking at a film with impersonators. This was a film with actors. So while I appreciated Jamal having some resemblance to B.I.G., I appreciated that he didn't impersonate him. Jamal simply acted like a big rapper from Brooklyn that experienced what B.I.G. experienced. Luke didn't impersonate the always optimistic Puff (definitely a Producer's embellishment), he simply acted like a smart, hungry, and young music Producer. This film was driven by great direction and great performances.

In sum, Notorious was a good film with some great performances. The resolve of the film shows B.I.G. making peace with the women in his life (even Kim) and expressing a desire to change the world by changing himself. Whether this self-actualization really took place is immaterial, as it's purpose in the film just feels good. Whatever Notorious may have lacked in big-budget production, it gained with strong substance, content, and characters.

I know it's been a while since I've posted but I just didn't have anything to write about. During the Presidential Campaign I went on a writing and posting frenzy for several reasons (i.e. Sarah Palin, Sarah Palin, and Sarah Palin). I even went to Pennsylvania and campaigned and worked for Obama's Voter Protection Program on Election Day. But when President Obama was elected I just didn't have anything to complain about. And so while I'm still celebrating this amazing time in World History, I have to acknowledge the craziness that surrounds our "defining moment."
And so I'm back. Back with sarcastic comments about Pop Culture. Back with videos of stuff that I think is funny, entertaining, informative or just a downright plug for whatever I'm promoting. And so while I'm sure there will be plenty of people that will agree with some of the stuff I have to say, I'm sure that sometimes I will stand alone in my eccentric ideologies.

With that said, is it just me or:

Let me start this off by stating that I am a staunch Independent. I do not vote in the primaries because I do not believe that this world can only be seen through blue or red lenses. I actually liken the Democratic and Republican parties to legal and political expressions of the Bloods and the Crips. The Crips and the Democratics have an affinity for being poor, downtrodden, and proponents of moral degradation. The Bloods and the Republicans significantly outnumber their opponents, are bullies (i.e. Suge) and amass large amounts of wealth by either the unethical business practices of the oil trade or the illegal business practices of the drug trade. But I digress.

I am neither Democrat nor Republican. I am a man. Being a man gives provides me with a lens in which to look at the world. So from my perspective as a man I see women paid less than me for working harder than me. I see wives, mothers, and sisters struggle with my superior attitude.

I am also African- American. Being a Black Man gives me an additional lens in which I look at the world. So in my quasi-dichotomy of a worldview I see white men and women get paid more than me for working less than me. But I still see Black Women that get paid less than me for doing more than me. But we'll get back to this point. This leads me to my current concern over stolen agendas.

It appears that over the last 8 years, the Republicans have made an amazingly smart discovery. Most Democrats are not too bright. The Republicans have effectively stolen the Democratic Agenda (therefore Election) every four years since 2000.

In 2000, Democrats were lauded as proponents of Big Government as a watchdogs over Corporate Ethics and Political Accountability. The Republicans lambasted the Democrats as Socialists and praised the Laizzes Faire Doctrine of Ronald Reagan. However, when Al Gore won the Popular Vote in the Presidential Election, the Republicans ran to the Government to provide oversight and overturn the will of the People. This "stolen agenda" was just the start.

In 2004, John Kerry was recognized as a Vietnam War hero and staunch Anti-war protester based upon his personal experience. George W. Bush was recognized as draft dodger with very little intellectual ability. However, in the 2004 election, the Republicans painted John Kerry as unpatriotic and George Bush was painted as the great debater. John Kerry, the decorated war veteran, would eventually lose the election and George Bush would eventually continue to spend 12 Billion dollars a month (half of which benefits companies that he has financial ties to) on an unfavorable war. This mis-allocation of resources has increased debt, poverty, and crime.

In 2008, Barack Obama has been painted as the new guy with very little experience. The Republicans have sarcastically congratulated him as the first minority candidate nominated by a major party. However, the Republicans have implied that Obama's run is a result of Affirmative Action. The Democrats have countered that the Country needs a new perspective. The Republicans have countered with the nomination of Sarah Palin as John McCain's runningmate. This should come as no surprise as the Republicans have, again, stolen the Democratic Agenda. Sarah Palin is a sarcastic unintelligent hockey mom from Alaska. She has attended 6 different colleges in her journey to obtain her Bachelor's degree. She was mayor of a town of 6700. She was governor of a state that is 3000 miles from the closest U.S. territory. The GOP claims that she commanded the Alaska National Guard when on the contrary, the Alaska National Guard is commanded by General Petraus in Iraq, the President, and Congress. In addition, Sarah Palin has been under investigation for 9 of the 24 months that she's been governor. So is Sarah Palin qualified or a result of Affirmative Action? The answer is neither. She is obviously not qualified and Republicans dont believe in Affirmative Action. Sarah Palin is the embodiment of the Democratic "stolen agenda" of change.

If the Republicans truly wanted a qualified woman then they would have nominated Condoleeza Rice for Vice-President. She is more than qualified and has been putting out fires for George Bush for 8 years. But that goes back to my original point. Black Women get paid less than me for doing more than me. I get paid less than white men and women for doing more than them. See my point is that this year's election truly expresses the problem of inequity in this country. Barack Obama has to do more than McCain to be appreciated less than McCain and Palin. But a Black Woman (though more qualified than all parties) never had a shot.

In addition, the Republicans have painted Obama (the Community Organizer) and Biden (the poorest member of the Senate) as elitists while McCain doesn't know how many homes he owns and Palin's house-husband raises their children.

This year the Republicans have stolen the Democratic Agenda of "Change" and personified it through the same system of elitism and oligarchy of McCain and Palin.

Just saying. The Daily Kos, a leftist political blog, is reporting that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the Republican nominee for Vice President, is not the mother of her fifth child, four-month-old Trig Palin. Rather, her 16-year-old daughter Bristol is.

The "evidence" for this - you can read the full, and far more comprehensive account here - includes the following:

1. On March 6, the governor announced she was seven months pregnant, to the surprise of everyone, even her closest staff members.
2. Sarah Palin's water broke a month before Trig was due, but she kept a speaking date in Texas, then flew eight hours, direct, home to Alaska.
3. Upon going into labor, instead of heading to an Anchorage medical facility that could best accommodate a premature birth, she drove 45 minutes to Mat-Su Regional Medical Center, outside Wasilla, where she was mayor.
4. On April 18, 2008, Trig Palin, who has Down's Syndrome, was born a month premature. Sarah Palin returned to work after just three days.
5. Bristol Palin was taken out of Anchorage High School due to "mononucleosis." She was absent from school for 5-8 months of the time that Sarah Palin was allegedly pregnant (accounts vary).

This picture was taken with my iphone last night so I apologize for the poor quality (iphone's don't have flash). Please take a close look at it. If you look closely, you'll notice that this is a homeless woman sleeping on the street. However, if you look closer you'll see that she is sleeping next to her laptop.

Story

So last night at approximately 3am I left from Legacy Studios in Midtown and headed down to Germano Studios in the Village. As I pulled into a parking space I notice the above woman sitting on the floor and working on a laptop. It was a bit odd for me because even though New York never sleeps, 3am seemed really late to be on a laptop in the street. I assumed that she just wanted some fresh air and possibly lived in the neighborhood. But I was wrong.

At 4:15am I left the studio and headed to my car I saw that same woman sleeping...with her laptop tucked under head. Thats when it dawned on me that she was homeless. Then the questions in my head started:

1. Where does she charge her computer?
2. Who's wireless internet is she pirating?
3. What exactly is she doing on a computer anyway?

I guess that since I've understood the concept of being homeless, I've always closely aligned homelessness with mental illness. And then an even more disturbing question arose in my head:

4. Is this the new face of homelessness?

It's scary but:

5. Will otherwise functioning members of society be forced into homelessness as an option simply because of the disappearing middle class economy?
6. Is she eligible for Section 8 housing, Mitchell Lama, or any other subsidized housing program?
7. Is it ethical for me to take a picture of this person without their knowledge or permission?

The last question scared me the most.

Louis Vuitton won an undisclosed out-of-court settlement Thursday after a five-year Paris court battle against three of MTV's familiar faces - Britney Spears, Da Brat and "American Idol" winner Ruben Studdard.
The company sued Sony BMG Music Entertainment for allowing its artists to use the famous LV monogram in music videos and album covers.
"We believe the terms of this agreement will provide strong protection to our brand worldwide," Louis Vuitton's Nathalie Moulle-Berteaux said in a statement.
Sony BMG also agreed "to educate its record labels" about copyright laws, she said.
A spokesman for Sony BMG, which represents Arista, Columbia and Epic records, declined to comment.
Now Spears can no longer ride in a pink Hummer, laced with a cherry LV monogram dashboard, as she did in her 2006 video "Do Somethin'."
"We don't make dashboards," a Vuitton spokeswoman quipped.
And artists can't keep up the trend popularized by Studdard - who in 2006, printed his album jacket for "The Return" CD on Louis Vuitton monogram paper.
The fight for the settlement, estimated at more than $300,000, began after Vuitton sued Sony in 2003 for allowing Da Brat to bounce around in a video with a multicolored LV print beachball.

I guess I've been upset with Hip-Hop... but you can only get mad with things that you care about. I love Hip-Hop and how it has been an empowering voice for young people of color and poverty.

Much of my problem has been with the regional unoriginality. For example, when Jay-Z breaks in New York, every other New York rapper tries to sound like him. When Snoop breaks in the West, every other west coast rapper tries to sound like him. Most recently, with the success of Andre 3000, there's a trendy hipster movement happening in the south.

I'm not a fan of alot of the rap out now because most of it is a bad offshoot of something that was good in the past. However, I love anything original. I like some of what Lil' Wayne is doing, I love Andre 3000, I like Charles Hamilton, I still love Jay-Z (pause), I still like Fifty, still like the Game, and I still like Ludacris. I guess it would be cool to say I like The Cool Kids but I'm not that cool and I havent taken an earnest listen.

But at the risk of sounding like an old head (see Sickamore's blog), my favorite song of the day is by Raekwon featuring Mika. This song is called "Once in a Lifetime" and it just sounds special to me. Check for it on his Only Built For Cuban Links 2 album.

CHICAGO — R. Kelly's jury is complete. The prosecution and defense, after arguing about the racial makeup of the pool once again, have finally agreed on the 12 jurors — one of whom is a rape victim — and four alternates who will determine the singer's fate in his child-pornography trial.

Kelly's jury consists of eight white people and four black people (with one white, one Latino and two black alternates). The jury also skews mostly male, with eight men and four women (with two men and two women as alternates). Age-wise, the jury is about evenly split between young and middle-age adults.

But demographics only tell us so much. What are these jurors' life experiences? Their attitudes? And how might that impact Kelly's case? With the caveat that each of these jurors was able to look at Kelly and his defense team, as well as the prosecution, and promise a fair trial, let's meet the jury. (Their designated numbers were from the prospective pool and will likely change as they are empanelled next week.)

» Juror #69 is a white male in his 30s who is the vice president of national accounts for his company and travels a lot for work. He listens to NPR and reads Forbes and the Wall Street Journal, but his wife reads Us Weekly. He once sought employment from the attorney general's office, and he believes that the criminal-justice system has a bias against minorities. He's the father of two small children, and he believes that "child porn is as low as it gets." On his jury questionnaire, he said that he believed Kelly was guilty, but he told the lawyers he's willing to put that aside to hear the evidence.

» Juror #6 is a black female in her 40s or 50s who is the wife of a Baptist preacher. She lives in the same area of Chicago as Kelly, Olympia Fields, but she did not know much about him or the case: "I have not heard the local scuttlebutt," she said. When asked if she had ever been the victim of a crime, she mentioned that a mentally ill man once broke into her home and took off his clothes while she and her husband were asleep; she got an order of protection against him.

» Juror #9 is a black male in his late 50s who works in telecommunications and identifies himself as Christian. He reads USA Today and watches CNN. He's not a fan of pornography and said that he didn't like going into 7-Eleven stores and seeing pornographic magazines displayed, but "if a person wants it," he's not going to argue with their right to look at it. He's heard of Kelly but could only name one song: "I Believe I Can Fly." "My kids could tell you more," he said. He's also heard of witness, and former R. Kelly manager, Barry Hankerson.

» Juror #21 is a white female in her 20s and is a criminal-justice student. She wants to be a police officer, and her father and boyfriend are both security guards. When asked if she had heard of Kelly, she said, "Just that he was a singer and that he was arrested." She could only name one or two songs of his, and referred to his music as "very old stuff." She has a final on Monday, and to accommodate her, the trial won't start until Tuesday.

» Juror #22 is a white male in his 40s, and he's served on two other juries before, in civil-lawsuit cases. He likes to get up early to read the newspaper, but he doesn't like the Chicago Sun-Times; he will only read that paper if it's free in the cafeteria at work. "I won't buy it," he said. He knows someone in jail for DUI.

» Juror #23 is a white male in his 30s who works as an investment banker but dresses very casually. He's against the death penalty and wore an "Impeach Bush" button to jury duty. He reads Vanity Fair, The New York Times, The Economist and The Nation. He has friends who are attorneys and judges, but the only celebrity cases he followed were O.J. Simpson's and Clarence Thomas'. "I would hold myself to a very high standard," he said when asked about being fair.

» Juror #32 is a black female in her late 20s who works as a teaching assistant at a Catholic school where there was a sex scandal (a priest was accused of molesting two boys). She had heard of Kelly and his onetime protégé Sparkle and knew the name of the alleged victim but didn't know her personally. She discussed the video in question with her friends, and they're split — some think it was him, some think it wasn't. "I'm not sure," she said. "I can't say."

» Juror #40 is a black male in his 30s or 40s, and he's a culinary student, while his wife works with the mentally challenged. He's heard of both Sparkle and Hankerson. He has followed the T.I. and Wesley Snipes cases closely, but he hasn't seen the tape or followed this story and only has heard it mentioned on AM talk radio.

» Juror #48 is a white male in his 20s and is a recent college graduate. In another state, he was arrested for underage drinking (for which he paid a $450 fine) and possession of marijuana (for which he served five days and paid a $350 fine). He thinks people with money can afford "better lawyers" but said that people "are entitled to their representation." He has followed the Michael Vick case but said he is too young to remember O.J.

» Juror #44 is a white male in his 30s or 40s, who owns a financial company. He once applied for a job with the state attorney's office 15 years ago. He's been involved in a child-custody case, which would mean he has children, but he didn't specify. He saw a faded-out version of the video on the evening news, but he's indifferent to it and has no opinion of the case.

» Juror #61 is a white male in his 60s who emigrated from Romania and has been in the U.S. for 38 years. He thinks the U.S. has a better justice system than his home country but seemed confused a little bit on how much the prosecution would have to prove (beyond a reasonable doubt is the standard, but he kept saying it would have to be 100 percent). "When I go to bed, I want to have a clear conscience," he said. "I'm probably not the smartest guy, but I will do what is best and fair." Before he retired, he used to work 12 hours a day, five days a week. He also didn't recognize Kelly at the defense table, even though he said he had heard of the case.

» Which brings us to Juror #68. She's a white woman in her 20s who did her undergraduate studies and graduate work out of state. When asked why she has a personalized license plate about violence prevention, she said it was because of her rape case, for which she had sought justice but prosecutors didn't get an indictment. When asked if she could put aside what happened to her for this case, she said, "It would be very hard, but yes." When asked if she could be impartial in a case involving pornography with a child, she said, "It would be really difficult, but yes."

The defense wanted to strike this last juror but had used up all of its peremptory strikes at this point in some squabbling with the prosecution about how many black people versus white people were on the jury. Defense attorney Sam Adam Sr. accused the prosecution once again of using most of its challenges against black jurors, while prosecutor Shauna Boliker countered that the defense had used all of its peremptory strikes against whites.

Defense attorney Ed Genson even asked the judge to grant the defense one extra peremptory strike, and when Judge Vincent Gaughan asked on what grounds, Genson said, "Because we've run out of them."

No such luck, and this jury (with four alternates) stands.
